Unravelled Prototype Open for Closed Prototype Testing (Apply Within)
Jamie and I here at Indiego have been working hard over the last three months to make a playable prototype for our first title Unravelled. We can’t say very much at this stage about what the game comprises (unless you sign up as a tester of course!) though we can say we are in need of testers in abundance to enlighten us with early impressions.
These last three months have been a steep learning curve for us; we have darted from engine to engine in the early stages finally to settle on a bespoke one of Jamie’s creation. The visual aesthetics have come full circle, from a craft/handmade style to a Klonoa style back to a craft/handmade style. Milestones have been set optimistically, only to have them bunch up in a graveyard of half-completed deadlines. University workload has probably been triple what I expected and generally maintaining a high level of committed game design and asset creation has rendered any remaining social life something to be desired.
The focus now is on achieving a level of play that isn’t dependent on the USP to be thoroughly entertaining. Currently gameplay is shaky to say the least. The idea is there, polished and ready to be boxed up and sent to the publishers, however several obstacles line the rocky road from concept to creation. The biggest dilemma to date is the difficulty in translating a game dynamic from a creative mind to that of a programmers mind (is this why so few creatives manage and run their own indie studios?). The design document can tackle the blanket game, but when it comes down to the fidelities of game mechanics it is all about the accuracy and the detail that is communicated.
Difficulties aside, the experience to date has been wholly rewarding and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. I’m really looking forward to the feedback that will flow in (fingers crossed) and building on that feedback to make something truly unique and entertaining.
If you’re interested in being a prototype tester please email testing@indiegogames.com. Being a tester includes playing the early prototype, filling out a short questionnaire and reporting any technical difficulties. In exchange for your testing services, you get featured in the games credits and get money off any future Indiego games.
Happy Testing!
